Your Own Brand of Magic
YOUR OWN BRAND OF MAGIC
Part 1: Your Personal DNA
“You were born to be an original. Don’t die a copy.” John Mason
“Don’t compare yourself with anybody.” Jiddu Krishnamurti
The happiest people I know are those who get that they are a true original and express their Own Brand of Magic in work, play and relationship.
The unhappiest people I know, regardless of external success or status, have copied others. These people always fail, and don’t understand why they’re mildly or highly anxious, and generally dissatisfied despite working very, very hard to be a good somebody else. They’re easy to spot. You instinctively know them because you notice your energy being stolen when you’re with them, and feel relieved, and tired when they go away.
The happy people, whether they radiate The Own Brand of Magic naturally, or through rigorous relearning, are also easy to spot. Think right now of those you know who are relaxed, comfortable in their skin, interesting, fun. You might even think when you’re with them: “I really feel good being around this person, and I feel happy, and creative.” or, “I wish I was this relaxed in my life.” You think that one secretly, of course.
Learning how to be ourselves, to live Our Own Brand of Magic isn’t easy, but it’s the only key to unlock your dreams. I know, because I’ve been in a Master Class for 30 years with my mentor who reversed the playbook I was given as a child and has taught me what I’m passing on to you.
She gave me positive reinforcement when I was “myself”, and negative reinforcement when I was “not myself.” She is gifted with a natural ability to discern the true from the false. Then after a million years I began to learn to operate according to my own nature. She still is there for me, but today I’m taking responsibility for myself. What a relief for her! Now I live my Own Brand of Magic, mostly, and when I slip into unconscious patterns of thinking, feeling, and behavior, I recognize it because I don’t feel good about myself, and change, because I can.
Or, I call her and check in.
.Not everybody can be themselves. Crazy, I know, but there it is. But some of us can relearn and be happier.
This may not be breaking news to you. You maybe thinking that this is old stuff, psych 101, and of course, you’re right.
What I ask you to consider is that even though these are basic, simple concepts already known to you, they are as urgent today as they may have ever been throughout history. I’m not just talking about recent history, I’m referring to this fundamental imperative to imprint ourselves in our world and experience in ancient history, including spiritual traditions that foreshadowed today’s complicated world. There is an acute need today as in the past to live our own life, not a facsimile of another’s.
It is the imperative To Be that I recognize and cultivate within myself and those I work with. Why? Because it’s my nature to communicate what I am, and have learned. That is what I have learned from my mentor.
32,000 years a human being placed his or her hand at the entrance to Chauvet Cave in France.
Somehow in mysterious ways I can’t explain, a human being who lived 32,000 years ago has inspired me. His or her Own Brand of Magic continues to Live. My fantasy is that our ancestor was making a statement: This is Who I Am!
I want for you and I to know the power of being fueled by the same life-force that created this imprint in our modern lives today. Harnessing the power of our own identity is our challenge today.
Reactivating Your Own Brand of Magic.
Relearning can begin with concepts, but your own body-mind is your best resource. Tune into the information, signals and feedback that come from your increased awareness of your own experience.
Jimmy Kimmel also has inspired me. He stepped out of the box out of his own personal experience and is making a difference right now with The Jimmy Kimmel Test.
Here’s a simple way for you to begin your relearning. You do Not have to change any behaviors.
Here’s The Marsha Mendizza Test.
In any given situation, ask yourself these three questions:
a. What do I want?
b. How do I feel?
c. What are my values?
This week just collect data. Next week you might look at change.
This is the beginning of a 4-Part Series. Next Week: Your Own Brand of Magic in Relationship.
